Understanding the basic drivers of investment returns--specifically the concept that future returns are driven by the sum of current yield and future dividend growth--is essential to grasping the rest of the story. But thus far I've assumed that dividends and growth come out of thin air. Just where dividends come from is the topic of Chapter 3.
